The majority of our English language students are children adopted from Russia, and we tailor our lessons
to suit their specific needs. Our general pattern of instruction begins by determining the child's
level of communication and comprehension. Then we shift to a series of exercises designed
to build a solid and useful foundation in English - that is, we focus less on the rules of grammar
and more on concrete, useable language. Eventually we introduce simple reading and writing tasks
with children's books, all the while building on the child's conversational ability.
It is quite useful to have the parents' input on specific topics in our lessons, and
we strongly encourage parents to take an active role in choosing material for their children. In the best cases,
we have found that regular lessons - with the input of an involved parent - provide a wonderful bonding experience
for the new family.
Since learning a language is a slow and sometimes frustrating process, we also provide tutoring for Russian
children once they enter American school. We can help with mathematics, history and social studies, geography, and,
of course, English. Additionally, we provide Russian lessons for these children once English assumes a dominant role
in their lives. We enthusiastically support parents who encourage their child's Russian heritage and understand
the advantages of a bilingual education.
A typical teaching session runs for two hours, which breaks down into two 50 minute lessons with a
nice recess in between. Our standard fee is $20-$30 per lesson, per child.
